Terry Derstine

I was 17 years old when I totally surrendered, making a commitment to walk with Jesus.

Terry Derstine Life Trek mentorI grew up in a Christian home where we read the bible, attended church every time there was a service and heard the gospel preached. I memorized scripture in Sunday school where I first decided to follow Jesus and as I got older was involved with our church youth group. I checked all the boxes living for Jesus by going to church, being a good person, and singing in the men’s chorus. At the age of 15 or 16, I felt I was missing something and felt a strong conviction that I needed to totally surrender my life and have a personal relationship with Jesus, and be baptized.

One scripture I clearly remember our 5th grade Sunday School Teacher had us memorize was, Galatians 5, the fruits of the spirit. verse 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. These verses have had a huge impact on the way I try to live my life.

Traveling on life’s journey, I did not always display the fruits of the spirit but knew I was saved and a child of God. I did my best to live life for God, saved by grace, and could go to my heavenly father and ask for forgiveness.

My walk with the Lord grew when our daughter started to struggle in life. I was not able to take away her migraines, doctors were not able to diagnose her issues so I kept crying out to God, praying, reading scripture, and listening to hymns of faith. At that time in my life God gave me a clear purpose to act and support those who felt helpless, hopeless; and homeless. Over time God gave me peace only He could provide in my darkest times. He is a faithful Father and I know without a shadow of a doubt I will meet my heavenly father when my life on earth is over.
